The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), as Nigeria’s national oil company, relied heavily on legacy applications hosted on end-of-life hardware. This setup posed critical risks, including:
Outdated and inefficient infrastructure
High cost of maintenance and support
Security vulnerabilities due to aging systems
Limited agility for innovation and scale
To address these challenges, NNPC needed a secure, scalable modernization approach aligned with compliance standards and ready to support the next phase of digital transformation.
Reliance Infosystems led the secure modernization of NNPC’s legacy applications, rehosting critical systems on Microsoft Azure.
As part of the architecture designed for NNPC’s migration to Azure, the project utilized the AI-driven features of Microsoft Defender for Cloud to strengthen threat detection, streamline security monitoring, and proactively oversee system performance. Through advanced machine learning, Defender for Cloud delivered actionable security intelligence that enhanced operational resilience and ensured a secure, efficient cloud environment.
To enhance cloud security, we integrated Microsoft Defender for Cloud for unified visibility and threat detection and enforced secure access with Microsoft Entra ID and Conditional Access. We also implemented CI/CD pipelines to enable automated deployments and faster application updates, enhancing agility and operational efficiency.
This engagement delivered substantial strategic and financial value by addressing critical legacy infrastructure challenges.
The scalable, secure cloud foundation established enables NNPC to innovate faster, reduce operational risks, and confidently scale operations, underscoring the long-term growth potential and strategic importance of this partnership.
At the community level, the transition to cloud has improved energy efficiency by reducing dependence on obsolete, power-intensive hardware. It directly contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing the organization’s carbon footprint.
Also, by integrating advanced security measures and ensuring compliance with industry standards, the project has successfully protected sensitive data and reduced the risk of cyber threats, contributing to a safer digital environment for the community.
Reliance Infosystems, in collaboration with NNPC, conducted a thorough assessment of their legacy on-premises systems and successfully executed a secure and efficient migration to Microsoft Azure. This initiative marked a significant milestone in NNPC’s digital transformation, with Reliance playing a key role as a strategic partner in enabling a modern, cloud-based IT environment
The project was supported under Microsoft’s Co-sell Ready program, with direct collaboration and guidance from Microsoft employee Joel Shaibu.
